Oh, that took me a sec'. XD It's actually silver but it's hard to see from the picture.
It's not applique in the traditional sense of embroidery or anything like that. I sketched out the shapes on folded paper and cut them out to have a symmetrical template. Then I traced the template on the back of a really thin vinyl, and cut that out. The blue fabric of the coat is cotton moleskin, so it's porous and accepts adhesives pretty well. Keeping that in mind, I applied double sided iron on "heat-n'-bond" (a glue-y paper that becomes glue-y when you iron it) to the silver, peeled off the protective layer and then applied to to the blue coat!
It doesn't peel, and there are no seams or anything like that. What you get is this ethereal design that sorta' glows next to the muted fabric and doesn't reveal how it actually got to be on the item.
